Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the option to contest certain rulings from the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
