The Compassion of People We Don't Know: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Supported Me Secure the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a friend. Since my travel mate was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a large ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I shared that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the university – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I ought to seek a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The engineering student came up to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but immediately informed my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where anything feels possible – she responded: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for three years. An advantage of the role was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in multiple respects. I lacked the courage or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a position in Switzerland where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
