EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
