A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
